CARN

The Canal Revitalisation Network is a systemic initiative designed to address the growing problem of environmental pollution in local towns across the UK.

CARN offers numerous social and environmental benefits. It begins with government- and canal trust–backed clean-up efforts, then engages communities in ongoing maintenance through the introduction of flora and fauna to create vibrant water ecosystems. This initiative not only attracts new wildlife but also transforms canals into community hubs that foster collaboration and growth.

The UK has over 4,700 miles of underutilised canal. With the decline of both social cohesion and infrastructure, people increasingly struggle to connect with their communities and their environment. Yet canals hold the potential to become shared oases, places where people can gather, collaborate, and actively contribute to improving their local ecosystems.
